Many people appear to be unaware that there is a law (Title 29-A §2054) in Maine that requires drivers to move over to a non-adjacent lane or if not possible, to use prudent speed to pass safely, emergency vehicles INCLUDING wreckers working on the side of the road to load or extricate vehicles from various undesirable positions along roadsides here in Maine.

We have had many unpleasant experiences dealing with drivers who either don’t know there is such a law or could care less about the safety of those people working on the side of the road. We have made every attempt to ensure that our drivers and vehicles are visible in any kind of weather. Our uniforms are in compliance with State and Federal law requiring ANSI Class 3 level for emergency personnel working on the roadside, we have reflective lettering on our trucks and emergency lights and beacons on our trucks. In cold weather you may need to add a little more air to make sure you have the recommended tire pressure because in the cold the air contracts.

It is imperative that you outfit your car for the winter. Of course, we will come and [...]

That there are many people out there with tow trucks towing YOUR CAR that are not insured to do so? How can you tell the difference? Here are a couple of ways:

* Make sure the trucks are registered commercially. That means that their license plate will have the entire word “Commercial” printed on them and that they are not a wrecker plate (i.e., 999 W), in which case the truck is not authorized to tow commercially, but is only covered for towing their own business vehicles.

Note that just because they say “Commercial” does NOT mean they are fully covered. ALSO ASK FOR:

* Ask them to provide evidence of their “On Hook” insurance coverage. In order to obtain on hook coverage for vehicles being towed for hire, you must register the vehicle and pay additional insurance costs. This is why a lot of companies try to avoid the extra insurance. [...]
